Misha Plam, Boulder, Colorado, March 10, 2008. AlphaSniffer LLC, a privately held company developing a new technology for rapid, sensitive, label-free detection of biomarkers, today announced the appointment of Dr. J. William Freytag, 57, as Chairman of the Board of Directors. As AlphaSniffer’s new Chairman, Dr. Freytag brings tremendous experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Most recently Dr. Freytag served as Chairman and CEO of Aspreva Pharmaceuticals, which was sold to Galenica Holding SA in 2007. Before that, he was President, CEO and Chairman of Myogen, Inc., a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company, which was acquired by Gilead Sciences in 2006. Prior to Myogen, Dr. Freytag served as Senior Vice President, Technology and Business Development at Somatogen, Inc., and President, Molecular Diagnostics at Boehringer Mannheim Corporation. He also held senior positions in the areas of business operations, strategic planning and business development within the Medical Products Department of E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. “Bill’s extensive knowledge of the biotech and pharmaceutical industries and his deep knowledge of molecular diagnostics enable him to make a unique contribution to AlphaSniffer’s next phase of development,” said Dr. Misha Plam, founder and CEO of AlphaSniffer. “Having established proof of principle of the company’s label-free molecular detection platform, and now scaling it to multiplex-array capability, we are ready to establish the commercial strategy for our powerful technology. Bill will provide tremendous insight and focus as we move toward commercially significant markets.” “I am looking forward to working closely with Misha and the AlphaSniffer Board to define our future business strategies for exploiting the powerful technology developed by the company,” said Dr. Freytag. Dr. Freytag currently serves on the Board of Directors for Immunicon Corporation, ARCA Discovery, Inc. and Sierra Neuropharmaceuticals, Inc. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas Medical Center, and a B.S. in Biochemistry from Purdue University. Dr. Freytag completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Duke University Medical Center. AlphaSniffer, established in 2003, has developed a proprietary technology for real-time, sensitive, label-free detection of medically and commercially important molecules such as DNA, proteins, toxins, contaminants and other molecules. Applications using this broad technology platform include real-time detection instruments for the medical research, personalized medicine and medical diagnostics markets, pharmaceutical process control, the defense and homeland security markets, and other industrial applications. The core technology, known as SPR/CPI, was invented at AlphaSniffer by Dr. John Hall, 2005 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics, Slava Petropavlovskikh, and Dr. Oyvind Nilsen. Having established proof of principle, the company is now extending the capabilities of its instruments through development of a multiplex-array system. |
